Why This Timeline?
Many former seminarians cherish the great memories they have of Saint Anthony's Seminary. Over the years the school has helped foster and nurture a genuine sense of belonging in those who choose to look back in wonder and gratitude. As we grow older the waves of nostalgia often create selective memories. Painful and unpleasant ones are usually pushed aside, ignored or forgotten. In addition to our own unique experiences, the Saint Anthony's Seminary Timeline (SAS Timeline) is one way to help us become more mindful of all who attended the school and more understanding of everyone's experiences.
The SAS Timeline is a reference and education resource that attempts to record and present a complete and unabridged history of Saint Anthony's Seminary of Santa Barbara, California. The timeline does not purport to replace or refute other histories, stories or accounts of Saint Anthony's Seminary. Rather, it intends to reconcile errors and omissions, unintentional or otherwise, particularly as they pertain to the clergy sexual abuse scandal that first rocked the seminary in 1992. The SAS Timeline is an attempt to establish a more accurate and fair account of events and circumstances that comprise a deep and rich history shared by hundreds of former students, faculty, families and members of the community.
No one can erase the truth from their lives. When only part of a story is being told as though it were complete, a cycle of injustice is put in motion. Living a genuine life helps us to acknowledge both the joyful and the sorrowful times as we learn to trust how and what we feel. This shared history is a gift we offer to ourselves and to all our brothers.
NOTE: The SAS Timelne borrows from, and is closely modeled on, the timeline that appears on the Saint Anthony's Seminary Alumni website, and it utilizes it as a direct source of information (as applied and verified). Many of the entries on The SAS Timeline have their own original sources; many more reference the alumni website, the new seminary archive website, and the original seminary archive website. Visitors are redirected via links when appropriate. While SafeNet fully appreciates the efforts of those who compiled this initial timeline, its flawed history nevertheless compelled us to create The SAS Timeline after it became clear that being "inclusive" and "preserving and extending the community of brotherhood" did not necessarily refer to everyone.
